Visual field testing is one of the most effective diagnostic tools for detecting and monitoring glaucoma and other conditions that affect vision. In many eye diseases— especially glaucoma—peripheral (side) vision is often affected first, long before noticeable changes in central vision occur.
Visual field testing helps your eye doctor evaluate how well you can see in all areas of your visual field and can detect abnormalities related to:
Glaucoma
Retinal diseases (central or peripheral)
Optic nerve damage
Drooping eyelids (ptosis)
Neurologic conditions affecting the visual pathways between the eye and the brain
This testing is also an important part of ongoing monitoring for patients who may be at higher risk for vision loss, including those with:
Multiple sclerosis
Hyperthyroidism
Pituitary gland disorders
Central nervous system conditions (such as tumors affecting vision pathways)
History of stroke
Diabetes
High blood pressure
At North Texas Ophthalmology Associates, we continually invest in advanced diagnostic technology to improve accuracy, comfort, and efficiency for our patients. We are proud to offer modern visual field testing options, including virtual visual field testing performed in-office.
These newer systems allow for:
Faster and more comfortable testing
High-quality, reliable digital results
Improved patient experience, especially for those who have difficulty with traditional testing methods
Visual field testing is non-invasive, painless, and does not require dilation. Depending on your needs, your doctor may use one or more of the following testing methods:
Static Automated Perimetry
A computerized system measures how well you detect lights of varying size and brightness while focusing on a central target. You simply press a button when you see a light.
Kinetic Perimetry
This method uses moving points of light that enter from the outer edges of your vision to help determine the full extent of your visual field.
Virtual Visual Field Testing
Using advanced in-office technology, this option provides a streamlined and patient-friendly way to assess visual fields while maintaining the same high diagnostic standards.
Your results are digitally recorded and reviewed directly by your eye doctor. If abnormalities are detected, additional testing may be recommended. For patients with glaucoma, visual field testing is typically performed multiple times per year to monitor disease progression and guide treatment decisions.
If you have concerns about your peripheral vision or would like more information about visual field testing, we encourage you to schedule an appointment with our experienced eye care team. Early detection and consistent monitoring play a critical role in protecting your vision.
